Jereann King Johnson

Program Coordinator

Growing up in Southwest Georgia and living in rural Warren County, North Carolina, for over 40 years, Jereann King Johnson deeply appreciates southern cultural and spiritual traditions. Education and history are two areas to which she has devoted much of her professional career. She has many years of experience in adult education and curriculum design, community building, and community organizing. Jereann spent considerable time in her early career studying and creating practitioner inquiry projects for teacher professional development. She trained teachers in place-based teaching and learning in rural schools in the south and taught leadership skills to community members in Northeastern communities. She recently coached New England school leaders, building their capacity for broad-based parent and community engagement.

Jereann King Johnson deeply values her work with Living the Word Justice and Equity Ministry. She draws on her youthful foundations and roots in Nelson Chapel AME Church, where church members stood up for civil rights and community improvements and where there were tight bonds between school, church, and community. She believes that the church and faith leaders are critical in demanding justice and equity for all.

As a cultural worker, Jereann creates spaces and opportunities for people to work effectively across age, race, class, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and ability. She is a notable quilter and fiber artist and enjoys music, yoga, photography, and gardening.
