Crystal Myrick resides in the vanguard of innovators utilizing digital formatting for community expressions. With over 15 years of experience in communications and media industries, Ms. Myrick’s expertise includes hyper-local marketing, media relations, social media management, event planning, and community engagement. Her writing, editing, research, photography, and videography skills combined present powerful and compelling community programs. She is also proficient in a range of website and digital management.
Ms. Myrick launched “The Warrenist,” a regional digital news platform in 2017. The engaging multimedia platform and community resource for local, regional, and national audiences, highlighting the art, culture, and lifestyle of Warren County, North Carolina, also features the only community events calendar in the area. An outgrowth of Ms. Myrick’s innovative work cultivated partnerships and relationships with state, county, and municipal government officials, entrepreneurs, and community thought leaders. She directed and produced a video for the county’s annual report, State of the County, produces and hosts a live streaming show on Facebook and YouTube, Warrenist LIVE, garnering over 30k views since inception, an organized and promoted in-person, virtual, and hybrid sold out events.
Interest in media developed during Crystal’s childhood. As far back as 5th grade, she expressed interest in working in media. She borrowed her mother’s typewriter to write a letter to her principal to start the school’s inaugural newspaper. Her initiative proved successful, and at nine years old, she served as editor-in-chief and led a staff of six fourth- and fifth-graders.
Today she plans and implements media events such as “Taste of Warren,” the only restaurant week in the area, hosted food and wine experiences, and partnered with WUNC Radio. Crystal conceived, developed, and planned a local program, “The Women of Soul City,” a documentary showing followed by a panel of influential women in creating and building Soul City. The program included Congresswoman Eva Clayton, Dr. Charmaine McKissick-Melton, and Jane Ball-Groom, one of the founding residents of Soul City.
The COVID-19 pandemic canceled the long-standing annual Warrenton Christmas parade. However, Crystal Myrick’s creativity and innovation led to the creation of a virtual alternative, “Fallin’ for the Holidays.” Crystal planned, filmed, and promoted a virtual holiday festival featuring county and municipal officials, business owners, and artists sharing greetings, music performances, poetry, and an introduction by Governor Roy Cooper. Crystal’s innovation and persistence garnered recognition and several awards: Recipient of the first Warren Artist Market Award; Named “Media Project to Watch” by International Center for Journalists (2022); Trailblazer Award- Warren County Brotherhood (2023).
Crystal’s unwavering passion for writing continues to shine through her short stories and articles. Her latest personal essay, “The Unwritten Rule, Rewritten,” can be found in Inspirations: Anthology of Warren County, NC. Even with a heavy workload, Crystal remains active in her community by promoting and attending local events, creating works of art stitch by stitch with the Heritage Quilters, demolishing “the box” while serving on the Warren County Arts Council Board, and working feverishly towards lifting a 300 lbs. squat.
